What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are dietary supplements containing potentially beneficial bacteria or yeasts.  They are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host.

The human body has many means of fighting infections. One of the ways is through a healthy immune system.  Key to a healthy immune system is having a proper balance of friendly bacteria.  Sometimes called gut flora, they are probiotic bacterial cultures and are intended to assist the body’s naturally occurring gut flora to re-establish themselves.  All this occurs in the intestines.

Probiotics are sometimes recommended by doctors, and, more frequently, by nutritionists, after a course of antibiotics, or as part of the treatment for gut related infections. Claims are made that probiotics strengthen the immune system to combat allergies, excessive alcohol consumption, stress, exposure to toxic substances, and other diseases. In these cases, the bacteria that work well with our bodies (the friendly, beneficial variety) may decrease in number, an event that allows harmful competitors to thrive, to the detriment of our health.

Strains of the genera Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium (Lactic Acid Bacteria), are the most widely used probiotic bacteria because they are able to convert sugars (including lactose) and other carbohydrates into lactic acid.  This is the source of the characteristic sour taste of fermented dairy foods such as yogurt and buttermilk.  By lowering the pH, this process may create fewer opportunities for spoilage organisms to grow, hence creating possible health benefits such as preventing gastrointestinal infections.  Other names commonly encountered and closely related include bifidus and acidophillus.

Different studies have shown that the ingestion of Probiotics have shown a marked improvement in people who are lactose intolerant, and other diseases such as diarrhea, gastrointestinal infections, and even vaginal candida or yeast infections.  Helpful bacteria have also been of great help in the cases of irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, and even in improving the absorption of minerals in the body.

Probiotics Supplements have been found effective for children to boost their immune system health.  Kids of any any age may realize the benefits.

Taken as a daily supplement, they heavily influence the entire digestive and immune system.

Probiotics or helpful bacteria supplements are available in the form of tablets and capsules. However, it is best advised by various doctors to take these bacteria in the natural form, as well.  These beneficial bacteria are found in foods such as yogurt, sour cream, sauerkraut, tempeh, kefir, kim chi, miso and other fermented foods.

Maintenance of a healthy gut flora is dependent on many factors, especially the quality of food intake.  In America, the industrialized diet that has evolved comes up short of vegetables and fruits for far too many people.  Some of the best probiotics supplements also contain ample ingredients derived from whole food -veggies and fruits.  They may also contain prebiotics (flora’s favorite food), digestive enzymes, metabolic boosters and antioxidants.  Together, they make a potent cocktail that will go a long way in improving and maintaining one’s health.

Including a significant proportion of prebiotic foods in the diet is known to support a healthy gut flora and may be another means of achieving the desirable health benefits promised by probiotics.   These are found in foods such as oatmeal, barley, flax, onions, green vegetables, berries, bananas, legumes and whole grains.

Three Things to Ask about a Supplement Before You Buy

1.  "Are the main ingredients synthetic?"

They are synthetic if:  Under "ingredients", only the name of the vitamin / mineral appears, with or without its chemical name.  For example:

-"Vitamin C" or "Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C).  Versus "Vitamin C (from Camu Camu fruit).

2.  "Does it contain other synthetic ingredients or additives?"

Artificial colors: FD&C Blue #2 Lake, or, FD&C Red 40, etc.

Synthetic Preservatives: benzoates (eg sodium benzoate) , nitrites (eg sodium nitrite). sulphites (eg sulphur dioxide), sorbates (eg potassium sorbate), etc.

Additives: dextrose, sucrose, starch, etc.

3.  "If it’s not a fiber supplement, does it contain fiber?"

Fiber terms:  bran, glucomannan, cellulose, pulp.

Fiber is a cheap filler.  Take it alone.
